Founded in 1563 the city of Durango lies in a fertile
valley of the Sierra Madre at 1, 889 mts. above sea
level. The city with beautiful colonial down town area
was the political and ecclesiatical capital of Nueva
Vizcaya, which included for s
ome time, Texas, Nuevo
Mexico, Durago and Chihu
ahua, until 1823. Today the
city is the capital of state which has in its western
portion, 47, 560 SGMI. Of the Sierra Madre Occidental,
making it a perfect setting for adventure tourism.
In the mountains of Durango we find a vast variety of
flora and fauna, because of its different altitudes,
which are as low as 400 mts. at the bottom of canyons
on the pacific side, and a little over 3300 at its highest
peaks.
The western part of the mountains are scarcely populated,
giving us the opportunity to go trough them, with out
seeing very many people and by so concentrating on
its
canyons, waterfalls, and forests. A truly expectacular
adventure.
On the other hand, the Huichol, Tepehuano, Cora and
Mexicanero Indians that live on the southern part of
the sierra, enable us to experience, the ancient cultures
of people that are now almost extinct.
